At Jagannath University, particularly within the Department of English Language (IML), one such day unfolded when two generations of students stood at the same crossroads: one entering the beginning of their academic journey, the other preparing for ending. This unique combination of freshers’ reception for the 19th batch and the farewell ceremony of the 14th batch transformed an ordinary afternoon into a memorable celebration of tradition, unity, and emotion.

As juniors, we had been waiting for our reception day since the moment we stepped into the university premises. When the invitation finally came, the excitement rippled through our batch like a festive breeze. On the event day, we arrived at the auditorium with glowing faces and eager hearts. The atmosphere itself felt different—warm, colorful, and full of anticipation.
The dress code made the day even more elegant and culturally meaningful. The boys arrived dressed in panjabis, symbolizing tradition and festivity, while the girls wore beautiful sarees, adding grace and vibrance to the hall. For many of us, it felt like stepping into a celebration that blended cultural identity with academic pride.
Where Two Batches Met at the Same Stage
What made this day truly remarkable was that it was not just about welcoming us; it was also the moment when the 14th batch stood at the end of their journey. This meant that the auditorium held two different types of emotions at once—our excitement to begin and their bittersweet feelings of parting.
The entire auditorium buzzed with chatter, greetings, and shared smiles. It felt like our department came alive, bringing everyone—from juniors to seniors, students to teachers—together under one roof.

The program began as our respected teachers arrived. Among them was our honorable Treasurer, Dr. Sabina Sharmin, whose presence added great value and warmth to the ceremony. Alongside her, all our faculty members attended, making the occasion even more prestigious and meaningful.

Their addresses were filled with wisdom, affection, and heartfelt advice. One of the most memorable segments of the ceremony was the reflections shared by our respected ex-Class Representatives, Md. Amit Hasan Ornob and Ritika. After the speeches, the highlight of the afternoon unfolded—our cultural program. The auditorium transformed into a lively stage of creativity and expression. Students performed poetry recitations, enchanting the audience with rhythmic verses and powerful emotions. Others came forward with melodious songs, filling the hall with warmth and joy. The dance performances brought energy and color, making the audience smile, clap, and cheer.
One of the most entertaining parts of the show was the stand-up comedy by our Likhon Islam, who made everyone laugh uncontrollably. His performance brought a sense of lightness and togetherness, reminding us how humor can create bonds among students.

The department made sure that the juniors felt truly welcomed. Each of us received a beautiful set of gifts—a flower, a notepad featuring the department’s name, a pen, and a keyring. These were not just items but symbols of belonging, reminders that we were now officially part of the JnU IML English family.
